Free Hugs...Because We All Need One!
Sometimes, a hug is all what we need.

When was the last time you were hugged?
A hug is a 1)universal symbol of support and concern, or just a way of saying, “I’m here and I matter.” Research shows that we need at least three hugs a day to grow and become a better person. There is nothing like the2)relief of hugging someone you have been worried about, the sweet hug of a child or the embrace of a loved one you haven’t seen in a while.
When I saw the video of Free Hugs and the 3)Cuddle King, Juan Mann behind the latest 4)YouTube 5)sensation, I was really touched.
Every time in Wal-Mart or walking along Carolina 6)Avenue shopping, we are polite. We don’t often brush past each other and try to get into each other’s space and that is fine. I certainly 7)appreciate that space from time to time. But, I need a hug some days. I watch others pass my way. Alone. Could they by no fault of their own be raised by a family of non-huggers, or live for years at a time with no hugs at all? And I wonder, what would an invitation to a free hug do for them?
In fact, Free Hugs was inspired by founder Jason Hunter’s mother Mrs. Josephine Clayton Hunter, who passed away in 2001. Sitting at his mother’s8)funeral service, Jason listened as almost every speaker shared how Mrs. Hunter loved hugging people and letting them know how much they mattered. Touched by the speakers, Jason acted on this inspiration and walked the streets of his hometown, Miami’s South Beach, with a sign that simply stated, “FREE HUGS”. Hence, FREE HUGS was born.
In 2006, an Australian, Juan Mann, started the Free Hugs 9)Campaign. The serial hugger describes the free hugs he hands out in Pitt Street Mall as fast-food emotion. “It’s a way to make people smile. For every person who gets a hug, you see five walk past with a smile on their face,” He said.
On the 10)Oprah Winfrey Show, he recalled, “I’d been living in London when my world turned 11)upside down and I had to come home. By the time my plane landed back in Sydney, all I had left was a carry-on bag full of clothes and a world of troubles. No one to welcome me back, no place to call home. I was a tourist in my hometown. Standing there in the arrivals 12)terminal, watching other passengers meeting their waiting friends and family with open arms and smiling faces, hugging and laughing together, I wanted someone out there to be waiting for me. To be happy to see me. To smile at me. To hug me.
So I got some cardboard and a marker and made a sign. I found the busiest 13)pedestrian 14)intersection in the city and held that sign aloft, with the words “Free Hugs” on both sides.
And for 15 minutes, people just stared right through me. The first person who stopped, tapped me on the shoulder and told me how her dog had just died that morning. How that morning had been the one year 15)anniversary of her only daughter dying in a car accident. How what she needed now, when she felt most alone in the world, was a hug. I got down on one knee, we put our arms around each other and when we parted, she was smiling.
Everyone has problems and for sure mine haven’t compared, but to see someone who was once 16)frowning smile even for a moment is worth it every time.
I would just like to thank 17)Sick Puppies for their incredible song All the Same, which the free hugs campaign video would have never been the same without.”
His cuddling campaign received an international 18)dose of publicity today, after a clip showing his public displays of affection won a 19)coveted front page spot on the video sharing website. The YouTube video of 2006 came about after a meeting, and a hug, more than a year ago with the lead singer of the Sick Puppies, a Sydney band.
“I was one of those guys in Pitt Street Mall with a sandwich board advertising a shoe sale,” the singer, Shimon Moore told.
The two became mates, and Moore borrowed his father’s video camera to shoot 20)footage of the hug man at work.
“He’s achieved what he set out to do and I was lucky enough to be there to film it,” Moore said.
But his efforts to spread the love became a little too popular for some people’s liking, according to a 21)blurb on the YouTube video, which said: “As this symbol of human hope spread across the city, police and officials ordered the Free Hugs campaign 22)banned.”
23)Undeterred, Mann collected more than 10,000 signatures on a petition he presented to the City of Sydney council. Demands for a 24)halt to the hugs petered out shortly after, and the end of the clip shows Mann hugging an official.
City worker Elly Mitchell, who handed out a few free hugs on herlunch break today, said she was inspired to organise the event after seeing the video online.
“We’re going to hug the city,” Ms Mitchell said.
A City of Sydney spokesman, Josh MacKenzie, said he could find no record of 25)rangers asking Mann to move on.
“In fact, the feeling around the office is one of support for his campaign to spread a bit of happiness and love in the central business district,” the spokesman said.
Asked if he had accepted a free hug, the council spokesman said he hadn’t, “But I’m sure council staff would welcome the opportunity to have a hug,” he said.
