越剧形成是在浙东农村,但她的成长却主要是在30年代的上海。当时上海已是中国人口最多、工商业最发达,又是市民阶层人数最多的大城市,话剧、电影在上海出现一定程度的繁荣,为越剧提供了可以参照借鉴的艺术样式。越剧的全女班在上海相当新鲜,在争取妇女观众上很有吸引力;越剧的浙东语言,在上海完全能听得懂,越剧戏曲音乐,曲调优美动听而又比较简单,利于传唱,加之,同时期,昆剧的衰颓为越剧发展提供了大好时机。

The music of Yue opera is beautiful and relatively simple and melodious, which is conducive to singing. In the same period, the decline of Kunju Opera provided an excellent opportunity for the development of Yueju Opera.
