随着IPv4地址空间耗尽的迫近,人们加紧了对下一代互联网协议--即IPv6的研究;到1998年初,IPv6协议的基本框架已经逐步成熟,在越来越广泛的范围内得到实践,我国以CERNET现有的网络设施和技术力量为依托,建立全国规模的IPv6试验床,为致力于面向21世纪网络技术的个人和团体提供全真的网络平台,用于研究下一代互联网有关的网络技术,特别是安全、服务质量和移动计算,同时开发新型的网络应用,以及示范上述技术和应用,用以演示从传统的互联网向下一代网络过渡的方法。
