至2004年为止,美国的沃尔玛、法国的家乐福等跨国零售连锁企业大量进入广东省,为广东省零售产业带来深远的影响。一方面提高了广东省零售企业的管理水平、物流技术等零售企业关键的发展因素,促使广东省零售企业实行全面改革;另一方面由于零售企业作为流通产业中特殊的一员,是整个经济中的关键产业,跨国企业的进入为广东省带来很大的利益流失和风险。综合而言,跨国企业在进入零售企业初期为广东省带来很大的正效应,但在跨国企业进入一段时间后很有可能会带来很大负效应,这一时期的正负效应取决于广东省本土的零售企业是否有足够的竞争力与跨国零售企业抗衡。
