Objective To investigate the role and relationship of endothelin (ET) and angiotensin Ⅱ (AⅡ) in cerebral infarction. Methods Thirty patients with cerebral infarction and 30 normal controls were measured by radioimmunoassay simultaneously. Results The levels of plasma ET and AⅡ in acute stage of cerebral infarction were significantly higher than those in normal control group (all P <0.01), and those in moderate-severe cerebral infarction group were significantly higher than those in mild group (P <0.01) ). Acute phase of plasma ET and A Ⅱ was positively correlated (r = 0.7033, P <0.01), recovery (r = 0.2465, P> 0.05) and normal control group P> 0.05) no significant correlation. Conclusions Plasma ET and AII are increased in patients with cerebral infarction and consistent with the severity of the disease. Endogenous ET and A Ⅱ have a positive feedback regulation, the interaction between the two may play an important role in the pathogenesis and progression of cerebral infarction
