钢铁冶炼过程需要有很高的温度和一系列的化学反应。为了达到这些目的,大量采用氧气或富氧炼钢是有极重大的作用。氧气能直接或间接与C、Si、Mn、P等元素起放热的化学反应,因此氧气的使用能迅速提升温度。与此同时,通过这些化学反应,氧气能排除杂质元素、非金属夹杂物,并在氧与碳的沸腾作用中,能机械地带出一部分有害的气体。近年来平炉和电炉大量采用氧气炼钢就是这个道理。碱性电弧炉使用氧气炼钢的范围主要包括下列几方面:
