IFITM5 (also known as BRIL) is a member of the interferon-induced transmembrane (IFITM) protein family.Unlike other IFITM members that are ubiquitously expressed,IFITM5 is expressed specifically in osteoblasts and the expression peaks around initial stage of osteoblast mineralization [1].When IFITM5 is forcibly overexpressed,mineralization is enhanced,whereas silencing of IFITM5 expression inhibits mineralization.Furthermore,in the mouse embryo,IFITM5 expression is specific to particular elements of the skeletal system [1].
