In recent years, great progress has been made in the construction of villages and towns in China. During the “Eighth Five-Year Plan” period, farmers’ housing construction was basically maintained at a level of 600 million square meters each year, and a total of 3.067 billion square meters of new residential buildings were built. By the end of 1995, the country’s villages had a residential construction area of 20.929 billion square meters, a per capita building area of 21.81 square meters, a per capita use area of 16.88 square meters, and a per capita living area of 13.15 square meters. With the rise of the housing boom in rural areas, many problems have come one after another: a considerable amount of rural housing construction is in an unordered state, which leads to an unreasonable layout and the expansion of villages and towns without rules. The phenomenon of indiscriminate use of arable land and waste of land occurs from time to time. At the same time, the area standards are too large and the design lacks of rationality. The new houses have not met the requirements for comfortable living, but have also caused the deterioration of the overall environment. The old town landscapes and the traditional residential structures have been destroyed.
