Epidemic Education

  People.cn February 1
The outbreak of the novel coronavirus(2019-nCoV) turned this year’s Spring Festival into a special experience for children. Education is an inseparable part of the epidemic prevention and control across the country. It is a valuable chance for children to learn and grow up, which has profound significance for the future development of the society.
Knowing about a disease is not only a process of scientific development but also an example of how people seek truth amid rumors and chaos. Children should develop the ability to differentiate between rumors and truth without spreading unconfirmed and false information, and think rationally from an objective perspective.
To fight against the 2019-nCoV, many medical workers put aside their family, shouldered their social responsibilities and joined the battle. Seeing their devotion, students can learn to be strong and grateful.
Children are witnesses of this history. Although they cannot serve others at such a young age, they can develop the aspiration of contributing to the country, manage a balance between study, exercise and entertainment, and respect the importance of sustainable development of human and nature. All these will encourage them to absorb more knowledge in their future school life.

Psychological Face Masks

  Guangming Daily January 30
A series of measures have been adopted to control the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV), such as locking down the epicenter of the outbreak Wuhan City, capital of Hubei Province in central China. Chinese people have fully realized the seriousness of the epidemic and conducted self-prevention in accordance with the requirements of the authorities. However, some negative emotions have emerged among the public, such as anxiety and stress. These feelings can harm the peaceful and positive social environment, which is necessary for defeating the 2019-nCoV.
Media and social organizations should disseminate news that patients are being cured in a timely manner, and help them build confi dence. At the same time, rumors should be cracked down on and clarifi ed.
The media should also accurately publicize measures to prevent the epidemic and help people avoid inappropriate behavior, such as being rude to Wuhan residents despite their sacrifi ce.
Individuals need to calm down, and follow the measures for prevention and control to eliminate the possibility of infection. It can be helpful to communicate with friends and family members when people feel afraid.
In addition, mental health during the quarantine period also needs attention. According to regulations, some people are asked to isolate themselves for 14 days, which is the incubation period of the virus. These people should understand the necessity of isolation and follow the methods of prevention in the period.
The warmth of people including care, encouragement, help and trust is an important force to overcome major public health issues such as this epidemic.

A Nationwide Effort

As people leave their hometowns for cities where they work and live, the prevention and control of the epidemic is faced with a tough challenge.
To deal with the pressure and risk caused by the increased population mobility, a solid defense should be built with the efforts of millions of travelers. In view of the current situation, it is impossible for the administration alone to fulfill this difficult task, no matter how resourceful they are. Publicity of prevention and control should be carried out in this period by reminding visitors of the details of self-protection. In particular, the steps for epidemic prevention during the Spring Festival rush are different from those used at home. So relevant parties need to provide guidance to ensure passengers can fully acquaint themselves with the method.
Online work is also necessary to control the outbreak during the travel rush. If passengers are exposed to the novel coronavirus during the journey, the transportation department should have a team for data analysis to provide information through big data technology. In addition to helping hospitals and government to carry out their work, it can also serve as a platform for the public to get information and adopt corresponding measures such as regular prevention, self-monitored quarantine or visit to the hospital.

MEDICAL WORKER REPORTS CORONAVIRUS

Zhang Jixian, director of the department of respiratory and critical medicine care at the Hubei Provincial Hospital of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine, was the fi rst alerted to the novel coronavirus infection after seeing four patients with similar symptoms of pneumonia, which was later identified as novel coronavirus-induced pneumonia in Wuhan. On December 26, 2019, an elderly couple suffering from fever and cough came to the hospital, whose chest CT showed differences from other viral pneumonitis. The CT result of their son was the same although he did not have any symptoms. A merchant working in the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market, where the epidemic started, also had the same pneumonia.
The next day, 54-year-old Zhang shared her fi nding with the hospital, which was promptly reported to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in Wuhan. In the following two days, more patients from the market were admitted in the hospital.
“We believe the U.S. reaction may be a little over[reaction], especially the evacuation of diplomats from Wuhan…At difficult times, the diplomats of China would be sent in rather than be pulled out. You might get people there who need you.”
Huang Ping, Chinese Consul General in New York, at a press briefi ng on the new coronavirus outbreak at the consulate in New York City, the U.S., on February 4
“The current outbreak has hit the service sector including the film box office and tourism, accommodations and catering revenue. During the Spring Festival, the service industry was affected harder than during the SARS outbreak in 2003.”
Zhang Yu, chief economist with Hua Chuang Securities, on Bullpiano, a WeChat offi cial account on current affairs, on February 3
“Companies will need time to react to sudden changes in the market structure and business processes.”
An analysis by the China Chamber of Commerce to the EU on the impact of Brexit on China-EU economic interaction on February 4
“Economic growth will face greater pressure after the outbreak... But we believe that big data and artificial intelligence have great potential for responding to public emergencies, improving public security governance and innovating medical technologies, and will play a more important role in the upgrading of all industrial sectors.”
Robin Li, CEO of the Chinese technology giant Baidu, in a letter to all company employees on February 3
