Highly purified recombinant human tumor necrosis factor (rTNF) has dual effects on cell lysis and cell growth inhibition of the tumor cell line HL60 derived from the bone marrow cell precursor. In association with its anti-proliferative function, TNF can inhibit the expression of c-myc mRNA. The time of the decrease of c-myc mRNA in TNF-treated HL60 cells was significantly earlier than the time of cell proliferation, suggesting that c-myc inhibition is not the main reason for reducing cell growth.
