对于中国货币的起源,尽管没有准确的时间,但一般都有四五千年的说法。《管子》认为中国的货币起源是“先王制币”。司马迁在《史记·平准书》在考证前史论据后说:“虞夏之币,金为三品,或黄、或白、或赤,或钱、或布、或刀、或龟贝。”班固则说:神农氏的时候,就有金刀龟贝。此后,还有相当多的古代思想家都曾说过类似的观点。著名货币史专家彭信威先生表达了他不同的观点,他说:“在传说中的黄帝和高辛氏的时代,我们的祖先还不会使用金属,哪里会有金属货币?”~(1)。
