1949年12月25日,商务印书馆工会假西藏中路宁波同乡会举行成立大会。父亲应邀出席。在致词时,没讲几句话,突然跌倒在台上。众人即刻把他送入中美医院(今凤阳路长征医院)抢救。商务派人来找我。我立即赶到医院,见父亲尚未苏醒。病系脑血栓症,来势很凶。我以为应请乐文照医师,另迁别的医院。即往访乐医。乐与我同去中美医院,经详细观察,认为病情严重,但表示愿意一试,担负起主治的责任。翌日上午迁到离家较近的位于延庆路上的剑桥医院。说来也巧,从中美医院至剑桥医院途中,父亲卧在救护车上,神志开始清醒,问我到哪里去。
