1998年7月26日,一架布局新颖、外形独特的飞机进行了首次试飞。这架取名“海神”(Proteus)的高空、长航时、多用途飞机,由伯特·鲁丹设计,美国复合材料模型公司研制。此次试飞,“海神”的正驾驶是迈克尔·梅尔维尔(Michael Melvill),副驾驶兼试飞工程师是马修·吉翁达(Matthew Gionta)。在1小时40分钟的试飞中,他们进行了操纵性能的评估,作了起落架的收放试验,并在3600米以上的高空,以时速130~185公里的速度检验了该机的巡航性能。整个试飞程序由道格·沙恩(Doug Shane)确定。
On July 26, 1998, a first-of-its-kind test flight was carried out on a new and uniquely shaped aircraft. The high-altitude, long-haul, multipurpose aircraft, named Proteus, was designed by Burt Rudan and developed by the American Composites Model Company. The test flight, “Poseidon” is driving Michael Melvill, co-pilot and test engineer Matthew Gionta. During a 1-hour and 40-minute flight test, they conducted maneuverability evaluations, retracted landing gear tests, and tested the cruise at 130 to 185 kilometers per hour at altitudes above 3,600 meters. The entire flight test procedure was set by Doug Shane.
