Petroleum waxes accounted for only 73% of the global wax supply in 2012, down from 90% in 2002, due to a decline in the Group I base oil capacity and the market for synthetic and natural waxes to grow. Petroleum wax production is mainly used as a type I base stock for the manufacture of products. Kline & Co said the supply of Group I base stocks is declining due to technology obsolescence due to increased competition from higher performance Group II and Group III base stocks. According to Klein’s analysis, synthetic wax has increased to around 13% of the global supply market, including more and more Fischer-Tropsch synthesis and polyethylene wax capabilities. Plant wax is slightly below 10% of global supply. Global wax supply in 2012 was 10.4 billion pounds to 2022
