近阅《翁同和日记》.在同治七年(1868年)七月上旬,他缕记着西捻军失败的经过.“初二日,早晨,李鸿章六百里加紧捷报.少顷闻捻匪悉数荡平,惟张总愚未得,或云投河,或云自尽矣.军机见时即贺喜.”“初十日,晨入而李鸿章红旗六百里加紧报至.退闻张总愚逆尸已获矣.”“十一日,捻匪既平,策勋懋赏.”在农民大起义失败,清王朝“喜庆”的日子里,翁同和却反常地波动不安起来.就在初十日,他写道:
