义民爷,台湾民间又称作义民公、忠勇公、将军、大将军等,为祭祀那些死于保乡卫民、除暴安良的“忠义”之士的用名。民间认为这些人的鬼魂孤寂无祀,便将他们的遗骸收集埋葬,并称他们为义民爷,墓地称作义民塚,所建祠庙称为义民庙。义民爷与台湾民间信仰中的大众爷有相似之处,均为孤魂之祀,所不同的是,前者多死于所谓“义”,而后者则多死于非命。在台湾历史上,绝大多数的义民,是死于朱一贵、林爽文、吴福生事件和分类械斗中的。我们知道,分类械斗属于不同祖籍的人们所组成的地方集
