Among the products on display at the Tokyo Motor Show 2017 will be a new concept car powered by the recently announced SKYACTIV-X petrol spark-controlled compression ignition engine. For the SKYACTIV-X engine, Mazda said it has developed a new control system for HCCI combustion that extends the HCCI range to a larger percentage of the load map. The essence of Mazda’s Spark Controlled Compression Ignition (SPCCI) is the use of a ball that expands by spark ignition as a second piston (“air piston”)
