万佛山石窟位于洛阳市吉利区(原属孟县吉利乡)与济源市交界处的柴河村北。东临八里庙村,西濒柴河水库,对岸为焦枝铁路的济源市留庄至轵城段,该石窟群是龙门石窟周围诸多中小型“卫星”窟中相当有历史价值与艺术价值的一处。然在历代史籍中没有记载。直至1956年8月,新乡专署派人调查后才披露于世,但未引起文物考古界与美术界的重视,旋即在十年动乱中被破坏、湮没。20余年不见天日,几乎被人们所遗忘。1992年柴河村民将大部分湮没的残破窟龛造像又清理挖掘出来。这才引起社会各界的注目。万佛山石窟旧分上下两个寺院。故上寺、
