中国历史学从近代才开始自觉地探讨历史学自身的理论问题。近代的许多历史学家在大量介绍和吸取西方学术的基础上,认真开展对史学理论和方法论的研究,围绕着历史学的性质、对象、范围和功能等问题展开了长期和热烈的讨论。形成了空前未有的史学理论热潮。在近代众多史学家中,常乃德的史学理论具有较完整的体系和严密的内在逻辑。他特别注重对传统史学观念进行全面和尖锐的批评,由此提出自己对历史学的认识。其观点鲜明,富有思辨的色彩,很值得我们借鉴和吸取。
