生物硅是生物成因的无定形硅,沉积物中生物硅的研究有助于加深对表层海水初级生产力以及古生产力波动情况的认识。随着沉积物生物硅测试技术的不断发展,已有大量科研工作者对沉积物生物硅做了研究。南海是最大陆缘海之一,而围绕南海沉积物生物硅的研究工作最近几年才开展,并且主要是利用生物硅在柱状沉积物样中的分布来反映几百万年之前的古生产力情况,对表层海底沉积物生物硅的研究较少。
