清初时,中南海的丰泽园里有几亩水田,每逢农历8月就可以收获稻子。有一年的6月,康熙皇帝路过稻田,见稻子刚刚秀穗,但其中一棵挺拔、健状,明显高于其他的稻子,而且稻粒已成熟饱满。这引起了康熙的极大兴趣,他俯下身,精心地将穗掐下来收藏好。第二年,康熙饶有兴致地将稻子种下。果然,稻子又在6月成熟了。此米微红而粒长,气香而味腴,十分适口。康熙断定这是一个好品种,因它发现于皇家稻田,故起名为“御稻米”。
