South Korea will purchase two nuclear reactors from Canada, using fuel from US reactors. Canadian Atomic Energy Corporation has announced the value of the $ 790 million deal to sell two reactors to South Korea Electric Power Company. The South Korean company had previously purchased two Canadian reactors, one of which was built in 1983 and one is under construction. These Canadian reactors are essentially different in design from the U.S. reactors. Canadian reactors use natural uranium ore as fuel, and its uranium-235 content is only 0.7% (only uranium-235 can split and generate heat energy). On the contrary, U.S. reactors use “enriched” uranium ore as fuel, with a uranium-235 content of 2-3%. Uranium fuel used in U.S.-designed reactors still contains more uranium-235 than natural uranium. South Korea also owns six reactors manufactured by Westinghouse Electric and several similar reactors manufactured by the French Atomic Energy Corporation.
