莫里斯·梅洛-庞蒂的现象学哲学是关于生存的哲学。作为现象学本质还原的结果,生存属于前符号即符号形成之前的领域;生存的符号一直处于运动之中,在符号形成之后,符号的生存时刻依然没有停止,故生存又超出了前符号的范围。因此,生存的实质包括内生存和外生存。内生存指的是符号形成之前主体自身的运动,外生存是指包括符号生存情境在内的生存状况。梅洛-庞蒂的生存也分别涉及内生存和外生存。生存统一于身体。梅洛-庞蒂的“身体”概念具有源发性特质,身体与生活世界连为一块,身体既在主体之中,又在主体之外。梅洛-庞蒂认为,生存本质上充满了意义,而作为与意义密切相关的言语活动,在梅洛-庞蒂看来只是身体功能的体现。言语与言语的交流,最后表现为身体与身体的交流,言语与意义的关系,也表现为身体与世界的关系。
