至今港口已有泊位159个,万砘级以上泊位8个,其中25万吨级泊位1个;港口通过能力已达2500万吨;较1987年净增2250万砘,尤其是“八五”期间,港口建设投资就达7亿元。 近几年,先后引进及建成运行了一批石油、铁矿砂、成品油中转、储存等中外合营的大型港口项目。整个港口建设进入了一个实质性的开发阶段,并呈现出五个特点:一是大宗货物中转储存为主的水水中转功能日渐明显;二是以岙山、马迹山、老塘山及岱山等港域内的区域性、多层次的开发格局已形成;三是投资项目中外资比重不断增加;四是合作方式更加灵活;五是项目建成运营的经济辐射力逐渐体现。 第三,港口经营日渐拓展 港口经营逐渐向外向型、多功能、多元化方向发展,基本改变了单纯客货生产的局面,具备了以客货运为主,外代、外理、船舶拖助等配套服务的经营功能。港口经营机制逐渐向集团经营、股份制经营过渡;港口企业产值从1987年800余万元,到1996年增至5549万元（不包括兴中公司）。
