“Looking for ” is one of the eternal motifs of Chinese and foreign literary works at all times and in all countries. It is also a main thread running through the “Manawaka ” five novels. In this series of works, Margaret Lawrence carefully depicts the long journey of five women of different ages, professions, classes and regions looking for themselves in different ways and building their own independent identity. Hagrid in “The Stone Angel” is looking for the meaning of life; Rachel in “God’s Joking” seeks out the way of life through introspection; Moragh in Soothsayer seeks identity through spatial migration . Such a thematic presentation not only shows the important role of “looking for ” in the female self-identification and identity construction, but also reflects Lawrence’s profound thinking on the predicament and outlet of Canadian women’s survival.
