根据上海地区的立地条件及城市森林建设的需要,上海自1999年起先后从气候相似的美国西南部引进三大类栎树实生苗,包括南方红栎、北方红栎、苏玛栎、纳塔栎等,补充了城市生态建设树种资源多样性的需要,并在其生物学特性、抗逆性及生态适应性评价等方面做了大量工作。同时发现不同树种、种源间发芽时间、苗高、冠幅生长、耐水湿、耐盐碱能力、秋季物候及叶色等性状方面存在非常大的差异。上海园林科研所通过连续多年的系统观察和相关生理指标的测量、比色卡的比对,以速生、色叶期长、色彩整齐度高为首选标准,兼顾抗逆性(耐盐碱、耐水湿),筛选出苏玛栎中的优良
