网络门户(Portal)的最初含义指的是上网起始站,即网友打开浏览器到达的第一站,作为网友上网第一站的门户,它必须能最方便地满足普通网发上网的一切需求。门户网站的商业模式是目前众多互联网商业模式中最成熟的,即通过品牌整合尽可能多的服务和内容,并使尽可能多的网友成为该品牌的忠实用户。门户网站目前的主要收入来源是网上广告,未来电子商务也将成为其收入的重要组成部分。 新浪、网易和搜狐三大网站是目前国内最主要的网络门户。从网站提供的内容和服务上讲,三大网站基本类似,都是以提供新闻、电子邮件、搜索引擎、论坛聊天和网上购物为主,但给人的感觉还是有所区别的,新浪以新闻为主,网易的特色则是其网络社区,而搜狐则是以它出色的分类搜索引擎而著称。所以现在也有“新浪‘新’,网易‘易’,搜狐‘搜’”的说法,这也基本反映了三大网站的发家史。无论如何,作为中国网络业的主力,三大网站之间的竞争也势必会愈演愈烈。
