美国海军空间司令部为了能在九十年代及时更替舰队通信卫星(FltSatCom)和租赁卫星(Leasat),已把购买下一代超高频通信卫星放在最优先的位置。目前的FltSatCom和Leasat卫星设计寿命为7年,为避免海军全球通信工作出现空隙,它们得再在轨道上运行近7年。有三家公司——通用电气公司,TRW公司、休斯飞机公司在竞争下一代超高频(UFO)卫星的制造合同。海军将在4月份选定UFO的制造商。这项合同的管理机构是空间与海军作战系统司令部。
In order to replace FltSatCom and Leasat in time in the 1990s, the United States Navy Space Command has placed the highest priority on the purchase of the next generation of UHF communications satellites. The current design life of the FltSatCom and Leasat satellites is seven years. To avoid any gaps in the naval global communications, they have been orbiting for nearly seven years. Three companies, General Electric, TRW and Hughes Aircraft, are competing in the manufacturing contract for the next generation of ultra-high frequency (UFO) satellites. The Navy will select UFO manufacturers in April. The contract’s governing body is Space and Naval Operations Systems Command.
