Christine Lagarde, president of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), announced on March 7, that she would appoint Lin Jianhai, a Chinese, as the secretary-general of IMF. The appointment took effect as of March 22. Lin Jianhai was the first Chinese people having been given this important position of IMF since its foundation. He is also the second Chinese senior executive at IMF after Zhu Min, vice president of IMF.
Lin Jianhai’s appointment came because of his long-term working experiences. In 1989, Lin Jianhai decided to join in the IMF. In 1997, he was given the title of senior economist and served the Policy Development and Supervision Department of this organization to take charge of the international capital flow. At the end of 1997, when the Asian financial crisis broke out, the IMF was pushed to the frontline of tackling the crisis. Lin Jianhai mainly served in the department of examining and approving credit application. They put forward a lot of advices after analyzing the crisis and played an important in helping these countries survive that crisis.
From 1999, Lin Jianhai took the deputy director, director and senior consultant of the Financial Department at IMF. In 2010, he was appointed vice secretary-general of IMF and became an eternal Chinese employee with the highest position in this organization.
