Objective To investigate the expression and significance of thrombospondin 1 and endostatin during the development, progression and degeneration of hemangiomas. Methods SP immunohistochemistry was used to detect the expression of thrombospondin and endostatin in human dermal hemangiomas in proliferative, degenerative, and normal skin tissues and endothelium. The mean absorbance and mean positive area of thrombospondin and endostatin expression in hemangiomas and normal tissues at different stages were measured by computer image analysis. Results The expression of thrombospondin and endostatin was higher in proliferative hemangiomas than in proliferative ones (P <0.01). The expression of thrombospondin and endostatin in proliferating hemangiomas was higher than that in normal tissues There was statistical significance (P <0.01). Conclusions Thrombospondin and endostatin may promote the regression of hemangiomas by inhibiting angiogenesis.
