According to practical experience, temperature expansion joints shall be installed in single-storey factory buildings (including open-air bridges) of large length or width to prevent unfavorable temperature deformation and temperature stress. The current “Code for Design of Steel Structures” (TJ17-74) (hereinafter referred to as the “current specification”) stipulates that when the temperature section length exceeds a certain value, the structural thermal stress shall be calculated. However, in practice, the following problems are often encountered: 1. Under certain circumstances, can the length of the temperature section specified in the current specification be exceeded without calculating the temperature stress? 2. How can a reasonable temperature stress be calculated? In the current routine calculation, the temperature stress is often large. When the length of the temperature section exceeds a small amount, the temperature stress is calculated.
