Rare earth activated luminescent materials are of great interest because they are important for color television and lighting and are easy to theoretically explore the mechanism of luminescence. This article discusses these two issues. In fundamental research, the analysis of the spectra and paramagnetic resonance of rare earth ions in the crystal allows us to characterize the crystal field quantitatively and illustrates the interaction of rare earth ions with the lattice and other lanthanide ions. Among the several rare earth ions discussed, one can see that "europium is most useful for these studies, especially when its symmetry in the crystal lattice is in the mood. This article presents some oxygen-containing materials, which are the objects of extensive research so far and their luminescence characteristics are likely to be predicted. This makes the search for useful areas of light materials can be greatly reduced. The article discusses the advantages of rare earth activated phosphors used in color television and lighting, and gives specific examples.
