As a western novel written by Comac McCarthy, The Scarlet Merit reproduces the cruel history of the border between the United States and Mexico and reveals the violent nature of the western United States. Therefore, the discussion of violence itself has been a hot topic at home and abroad. This paper analyzes the aspects from the side, and concludes that the silence of women and the lack of female roles in Scarlet Mermaid are the unique techniques Coomac McCarthy used to show that violence dominated the West. The lack of female characters in Cormac McCarthy’s novels implies the lack of civilization and humanity in the west. The male characters represent power and violence, and their masters are the masters of violence. The delicate treatment of weakening female roles further corroborates the chaos and bloodshed in the west. Therefore, exploring women’s silence and absence is a more delicate interpretation of the violent elements in Scarlet Meridian.
