文章认为，市场经济的基本特质有二：一是在竞争机会上要求人人均等；二是通过追求自身利益来增进社会利益。市场经济与一定的社会制度结合在一起，共同对道德发生影响和作用。市场经济对道德的作用是双重的，即所谓的＂正面效应＂和＂负面效应＂。对于市场经济与道德进步两者的如何得兼问题，作者的基本观点是；（１）社会主义是解决这一问题的根本出路；（２）解决这一问题的基本条件就是社会主义支配物质财富与精神财富，支配市场经济与生产力，并使之服从于人民的监督。
