义在儒家思想中占据重要位置,而儒家义思想奠基于前儒家的《尚书》时代,有必要对今文《尚书》中义概念做一爬梳,以求明晰呈现出其发生状况。由每一处义概念使用中的不同词性而展现出其特定的意涵、规定:当其最初被用为名词时,义产生了法则、规范的意涵;当其被用为助动词时,义字具有寻求合宜、正当性的意义;当义被用为形容词时,意味着正当性已经获得,从而具有了善好的意义。这三方面意义既相区别、又有渗透,逐渐凝聚出具有华夏特色的义的裁制系统,为后来的儒家义思想的展开奠定了基础。义概念在其多层次规定逐渐形成的过程中,与天命、礼、德之间有着复杂的关系,也需要对此加以揭示。
