Active photonic crystal fiber core diameter larger, mainly used to achieve high peak power (high energy) pulse amplification output. Only NKT Photonics currently offers commercially-available ytterbium-doped (Yb3 +) active photonic crystal fibers with a maximum core diameter of about 85 μm. The production of photonic crystal fibers is mainly limited by the size of the core in the optical fiber preform. To achieve a photonic crystal fiber with a 100 micron core diameter, the diameter of the core material in the preform must be 5 mm, which is currently difficult to achieve.
