INTRODUCTION Otorhombep’s ferroalloys interest dates back more than 20 years from the use of the Kemi chrome ore process stored extensively in northern Finland and the ferrochrome plant put into operation in 1968. Since then, Otto-Punp has supplied ferrochrome plants worldwide. Over the years, other aspects of ferroalloy technology have also been studied, and the production of manganese alloys (high-carbon ferromanganese and ferrosilicon) is of most interest to us. In recent years, the research on ferromanganese production has been based on the pre-reduction in a rotary kiln, with the most common manganese ore for small-scale experiments. Due to the good results, Otto-Eng decided to conduct a large-scale trial at its Metallurgical Research Center and in the fall of 1983 the process of smelting manganese alloys with preheat and prereduction was created.
