Richard Schmidt was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1934 and began painting as a kid. At the age of twelve, he attended art classes and later studied landscapes with his father’s friends. After graduating from high school, he entered the American Academy of Art in Chicago to study portraits, landscapes, and cityscapes. He originally wanted to be an illustrator, but college lecturers directed him to lead him to learn from the early masters of painting. He established his career in painting and eventually became one of the most important impressionist painters in the southwestern United States in the late twentieth century. Has won the Portrait Artists Association 2000 Lifetime Achievement Award and the 2005 gold medal.
