Guido, the monk of Arezzo, is one of the most prominent among many church musicians. His method of education is more applicable than his predecessors: instead of relying on the voice of a teacher or the use of musical instruments, it uses six words or six syllables, as appropriate, for the only six sounds allowed in music, boys, girls (pueri et puellae) can learn new songs more easily; and arrange the six tones in turn at each of the fingers to make one octave. By virtue of their own eyes and ears, either active or passive, [children] can easily remember the progression of the six tones up and down. (Jean-Hubert’s Sigourney on Christians, chap. 144)
