Arthur Waley, a famous sinologist in the UK, translated 27 poems of Han Shan in the 1950s and published the first translation and research of the Han Shan poetry in the West. Wei Li’s interpretation and research on his poems in Hanshan Mountain are many sinologist’s characteristics for many considerations of translation norms in the translation of Hanshan’s poems. Although the popular simple Hanshan poems did not get a positive response in the English cultural context at that time, Welley’s translation of Hanshan poems led to the whole Western world’s upsurge of translation and research of Hanshan poetry. In fact, several cold mountain poems now widely spoken in the Western world are more or less nourished and influenced by the translation of Willis.
