自20世纪初至今,在“以人为本”的设计思想引导下,生产厂家以创造流行为目标,新产品层出不穷,消费者跟着流行走,以为流行的就是需要的,产品的寿命越来越短,不是其原有功能丧失,而是被更新更流行的产品所取代。如此大量设计、大量生产、大量消费和大量废弃导致了危及地球环境的许多问题。另一方面,消费者自身在享用众多物品和服务的同时,并不以此为满足,也未想过他们能否无限量地持续拥有下去。
