针对当时诗坛出现的格律暴政和诗情自闭两种倾向,艾青提出了诗歌散文美理论,具体表现在形式上的非格律化和口语化语言以及内容上积极向上、明朗易懂的诗情两方面内涵。其实质是一种有关自由体诗的风格流派主张,巩固了自由体诗在中国新诗坛的地位。这一理论存在忽视形式的问题,并将诗与诗的功用、诗与诗情混为一谈,但也从独特的角度强调了诗歌的音乐美和绘画美。
