Japan's Advanced Technology Exploratory Research (ERATO) program has added three new projects; quantum electronic device research, picosecond (picosecond) chemistry and plant ecologists. The three new projects were presented at a seminar held in Tokyo last week for a five-year project with a budget of 1.5 billion to 2 billion Japanese yen (12 to 15 million U.S. dollars). The ERATO research project was initiated by the research and development company affiliated with Japan's Bureau of Science and Technology in 1981 and is dedicated to funding jobs that seem unusual and may even be a little weird. The risk of such research work is large, therefore workers
