This article outlines the principles that underpin the US Defense Department’s internetworking architecture and introduce some of the protocols for implementing that architecture. Important factors affecting the development of this architectural model include: extensive experimentation and operational experience in interconnecting packet networks; evaluation of the interoperability and multi-level authority operations of the United States and the United States in meeting military needs; with particular focus on security, Survivability and operation in emergency situations.
