A rapid and accurate method for the determination of captopril by single-wavelength and dual-wavelength absorption spectroscopy was established. The characteristics of absorption spectra and the effect of coexisting substances were also discussed. Captopril reacted with Victoria blue B in a Tris-HCl buffer at pH 7.93 to produce a blue ion complex with one distinct positive absorption peak and one distinct negative absorption peak with the maximum positive absorption wavelength at The maximum negative absorption wavelength was at 488 nm. The apparent molar absorptivities were 2.04 × 10 -4 L / (mol · cm) (610 nm) and 2.03 × 10 4 L / (mol · cm) (488 nm), respectively. The apparent molar absorptivity was 4.07 × 10-4 L / (mol · cm) and the concentration of captopril was in the range of 0-3.0 mg / L. Beer’s law was obeyed when the dual wavelength method was used. The method is simple, rapid, high accuracy and selectivity, can be used for the determination of captopril in the commercial captopril drugs.
