1876年5月,美国费城举办建国百年世界博览会,时任宁波海关文案的李圭,受总税务司赫德委派,赴会观览,其著的《环游地球新录》记述旅途见闻及赛会盛况。李鸿章亲自为该书作序,赞其“于物产之盛衰,道里之险易,政教之得失,以及机器制造之精巧,人心风俗之异同……无不殚心考究”。该书问世以来,因所述海外风物新奇可感,文辞通俗易懂,流传甚广,颇负盛名,后被钟叔河编入《走向世界丛书》,为世人瞩目。
In May 1876, Li Gui, who was the Ningbo Customs Clerk, was held in Philadelphia in the United States in the founding of the Centennial World Expo. He was appointed by the General Taxation Division to attend the exhibition. His Traveling Around the World recorded a series of excursions and tournaments grand occasion. Li Hongzhang personally prefaced the book, praising it “in the rise and fall of the property, the dangers of the Tao, the gains and losses of the church and state, as well as the machine manufacturing sophistication, people’s customs of the similarities and differences ... ... all”. Since the advent of the book, because of the novelty of the overseas novelty, easy-to-understand diction, widely circulated, quite prestigious, after the book was written by Shu Shuhe “World Series”, for the world attention.
