Hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) causes pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary heart disease. This article demonstrates the effects of calcium channel blocker Nifedipine on pulmonary artery pressure and pulmonary vascular resistance in these patients. Von Euler and Liljestrand (1946) demonstrated that pulmonary alveolar hypoxia in the cat alveoli leads to pulmonary vasoconstriction and is also found later in many mammals, including humans. As a result of hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction, blood flow is diverted from hypoxic alveoli to improve ventilatory perfusion and gas exchange. Most of the lungs are hypoxic
