Gratzel in Switzerland and Pelizzetti in Italy found hydrogen sulfide to be directly catalytically decomposed into hydrogen and elemental sulfur by a cadmium sulfide aqueous suspension containing ruthenium oxide under visible light irradiation. This finding is of practical and economic value as a new and available method for removing hydrogen sulfide emitted from petroleum refineries and from some industrial operations. Often it is expensive to remove hydrogen sulfide from the flue gas, converting it to calcium sulfide, but the accumulated calcium sulfate can cause secondary pollution. In the new process, the released hydrogen can be used as a fuel, and the quantitatively precipitated sulfur can be directly utilized without any treatment, thus having potential commercial benefits.
