Recently, the American investigator Bradbury et al. Have confirmed several kinds of cellular proteins related to the long-term existence and replication of Epstein-Barr virus in host cells. This result may help to clarify the carcinogenic mechanism of Epstein-Barr virus, but also can be applied to gene therapy. Epstein-Barr virus is a herpes virus that causes long-term latent infection of B cells and is associated with Burkitt’s disease, nasopharyngeal cancer, and Hodgkin’s disease. Epstein-Barr virus genes are present in the infected cells as unclosed circular plasmids, but are degraded several days later if a normal plasmid is introduced into the cell. So, experts want to understand why Epstein-Barr virus keeps its genes undegraded.
