本世纪对农作物最主要的改良是增产。对多年来的株型调查表明,干物生产保持稳定,产量收获指数提高。现代棉花正具备了这一特点,即收获指数高、叶面积小、可迅速达到一定的叶面积指数、结铃早而快。与株型发生这些变化的同时,相应的耕作制却稳步不前。如果说株型的变化是育种家在产量基础上选育而成的,那么也就有可能通过改变生产体制进一步利用高收获指数使之更利于株型。1984—1987年在加州圣华金河各进行了19个田间重复,对表现型和栽培体制作了评定。
